Lower Back Pain Q & A

What causes lower back pain?

In younger adults, lower back pain is frequently caused by strained muscles. As you get older and the cumulative effect of wear-and-tear begins to have an impact, lower back pain is more often due to degeneration.

The most common causes of low back pain include:

  • Herniated disc
  • Slipped disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Arthritis and bone spurs
  • Sports and overuse injuries
  • Narrowing of the spinal canal
  • Compression fracture

All these conditions can lead to inflamed tissues and compressed spinal nerves, which cause pain.

What is sciatica?

When a nerve is pinched, you can develop problems anywhere along the nerve. Sciatica refers to pain and other symptoms that occur along the sciatic nerve; it’s most often caused by a herniated disc.

The sciatic nerve leaves the base of your spine and travels through your buttocks and down each leg. When a sciatic nerve is compressed, the hallmark symptom is severe pain that radiates down your leg. You may also develop burning, tingling, or numbness at any point along the nerve.

How does PRP relieve lower back pain?

Dr. Kulick often treats lower back pain with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP contains a high concentration of platelets, which are rich sources of proteins called growth factors.

When you’re injured, platelets go to the damaged area where they release growth factors that promote healing, reduce inflammation, and trigger the production of new cells to rebuild damaged tissues.

Dr. Kulick makes PRP in the office from your own blood, then he administers an ultrasound-guided injection to deliver the PRP to the damaged tissues in your lower back. As the platelets initiate healing, they reduce inflammation and relieve your pain.

What is prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is another nonsurgical option for relieving your lower back pain. In this treatment, Dr. Kulick injects a concentrated sugar solution into spinal joints. The sugar solution triggers a natural healing response, which attracts stem cells and growth factors to the area. The stem cells and growth factors reduce inflammation, relieve your pain, and regenerate new tissues.
