Mesotherapy is an extraordinary interventional medical technique for the treatment of cellulite and anti-aging, as well as an integral remedy for pain management in injured musculoskeletal tissues and relief from other medical problems. This procedure is widely practiced by physicians in Europe. It is comprised of a series of microinjections of conventional and homeopathic medications, plant extracts, vitamins and nutrients into the mesodermal or middle layer of the skin at the site of a treatment or injury.

Developed by Dr. Michael Pistor in the early 1950s, mesotherapy became officially recognized by the French Academy of Medicine in 1987. The Academy trains doctors in mesotherapy as part of that country's medical school curriculum. Cosmetics are a fraction of all mesotherapy applications used in France -- 80% to 90% of mesotherapy procedures are conducted for sports injuries, chronic pain conditions and general medicine.

Dr. Alexander Kulick studied the technique in Paris with Dr. Jacque Le Coz, former president of the French Society of Mesotherapy and Mesotherapist for the French National Sports Teams.

Cosmetic

For cosmetic treatments, mesotherapy offers a safer non-surgical option for dramatic results in facial rejuvenation, eliminating cellulite and spot fat reduction.

Cellulite

Mesotherapy offers a safe, less invasive alternative to liposuction for the effective treatment of cellulite, the orange peel-like and hard-to-get-rid-of condition that appears on the legs, buttocks and upper arms. Cellulite treatments will vary as the condition presents in various states. Treatment courses will depend on the individual patient.

Spot-Fat

Mesotherapy may be the only non-surgical treatment available for "spot reduction" and body sculpting in areas where diet and exercise have failed, such as the thighs, abdomen, hips, buttocks, waist, and upper arms. Losses of two to six inches may be possible from stubborn areas. Spot fat reduction can be treated in courses of four to eight treatments every other week, with maximum effects seen after three months.

Facial Rejuvenation (Meso-Lift)

Mesotherapy skin rejuvenation infuses the dermis with potent vitamins and antioxidants to rejuvenate and revitalize the skin. Patients treated describe their skin as firm, radiant, youthful and glowing. It is usually performed in an initial series of four treatments spaced a week apart. Results are maintained by twice a year with touch up sessions.

Medicinal

Mesotherapy is a successful treatment for a multitude of conditions found in sports injuries, pain management and general medicine.

Pain Management

Mesotherapy effectively treats muscle soreness and inflammation due to injury and speeds up recovery time. Mesotherapy can effectively treat musculoskeletal problems including sciatica, neck pain, lower back pain, tendonitis, arthritis and knee arthritis. Patients no longer need to rely on high doses of daily and complex oral pain medication regimes, which can eventually lead to liver and kidney damage.

Sports Injuries

Mesotherapy for sports injuries involves a local injection of medication into the dermis, as close to the site of injury as possible. It is used primarily for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and muscle-relaxing effects. Conditions treated include acute sprain and strain (ligament and muscle), synovitis (inflammation), meniscus and periostitsis.

General Medicine

Mesotherapy is primarily a system of delivery of small amounts of medications to various layers of the skin. The skin acts as a reservoir, slowly releasing the medication over hours, thus allowing prolonged exposure to the medication, and subsequently allowing the practitioner to use a fraction of the amount that would need to be taken orally, and giving a more profound effect. The medication is selected based on the medical condition to be treated, but is always used in small doses to eliminate unwanted side effects.

Mesotherapy has been used successfully to treat a broad array of medical conditions that are unresponsive or minimally responsive to traditional medications, or where treatment has been limited by side effects. Because of the small doses used in mesotherapy, significant side effects, in the hands of a well-trained practitioner are almost unheard of. The conditions treated range from acne, chronic sinusitis and pharyngitis to diabetic and idiopathic neuropathies, vascular insufficiency, wound healing, and migraine headaches.

In France, where it originated, it is used as an integral part of general medical practice and is used alone, or in concert with standard pharmaceuticals to enhance the likelihood of a successful treatment outcome.

The underlying principles were well described by Dr. Pistor as being the correct diagnosis, and the correct treatment using the smallest amount of medication as few times as possible.
